Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is the name given to the experience of abnormal moods or exaggerated mood swings:

  • The high moods are called manic episodes.

  • The low moods are called depressive episodes.

People experience different patterns and intensities of these fluctuating moods and the terms Bipolar 1, Bipolar 2, and Cyclothymia refer to the types and intensity of the moods experienced.
